Research Excursions

The IEP research excursions were shaped by the mission to understand the Cape Town’s contemporary issues from a variety of angles by engaging with various stakeholders and change makers.

18 Gangster Museum– walking tour of part of the Khayelitsha township and living museum tour where ex-gangsters and prisoners shared their stories

20sk8– youth skateboarding collective which serves as an alternative to gangsterism in the Cape Flats

African National Congress– met with the chief of staff for the Ministry of Social Development of the leading national political party

Afriforum– civic rights organization which is concerned with Afrikanner political, economic and cultural rights

City of Cape Town– met with civil servants from human settlements, urban planning and transportation departments

Coca-Cola, Peninsula Beverages– attended presentation about company’s corporate social responsibility efforts

District 6 Tour– tour of neighborhood of historical significance by previous resident who was kicked out of area due Group Areas Act of 1950

Imizamo Yethu Township Tour– tour by founder of the Sakhisizwe Youth Development Project which helps empower youth in townships

Iziko Slave Lodge– historical museum

Norval Foundation– art gallery tour

Parliament of South African– spectated plenary debate about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2019 State of the Nation Address

Salt River Tour- historical lecture, and graffiti art and community tour of area subject to gentrification

Reclaim the City– an activist group which is pushing their local government for inner city social housing, while facilitating the inhabitation of abandoned inner city government owned buildings

Robben Island– tour of Robben Island Prison which imprisoned freedom fighters such as Nelson Mandela under aparthied by ex-prisoner

University of Cape Town– lecture from PhD candidate researcher regarding transportation

Urban-Think Tank– interdisciplinary design practice which developed innovative housing model with locals that does not relocate residents
